Women and Cloth +Recycled Textiles

On this past Sunday, women met at the Multiplex Centre in Moricetown to learn more about how to turn clothing into quilts. I arrived, set up and got busy as the women filed in with their gear!

 

 Charrine worked hard on her new bag, applique, pressing so carefully, measuring, all the things we do as designers. Her cape which I forgot to take photo of is gorgeous!

 Lucy, got right into it and began following my instructions so well, she was done by the end of the day. Making a sweater baby quilt in this manner is so fast, its incredible!

Lucy Gagnon, Band Manager was so kind and donated many new fabrics to blend with recycled clothing and donated the lovely conference room for the day. Thanks Lucy!



One man Todd Lace, joined us to learn how to make a custom drum bag. This was a first for any man to show up at any textile recycling workshop. I was real  happy to have Todd along for the day, he's a keen sewer!

Mabel was busy so much that broken needles and laughter erupted from this wonderful lady! What a treat to meet Lucy's Mom.

This day of textiles and recycling was sponsored by Kitimat-Stikine Regional District of Northwestern BC to promote improved recycling of all consumer items.

This group of learners were so warm and inviting to me! I thank you all for an awesome day!


This is my version of recycled sweater  baby quilt. Tutorial coming in 2013.

      Hi Debra, there is not a pattern to buy or use, but you can make one easily with cutting 5 inch squares and joining them together.

      Hi Pamela,

      I'm sorry this is coming back to you so long after your first comment. Its been a busy and relocating time this last decade, but now I'm sorted with no more moving. Yes, I totally loved working and teaching with the Indeginous folks of the north and anywhere. Lovely people to make stuff with. I had so much fun and we all giggled a lot.

    This sweater quilt pattern is having several versions made up for a variety of sweater types, for the photos and will be available at my organic cotton shop online, www.organicquiltcotton.com

    Its a fun one and you'll never go back to ordinary quilting after this. It breaks all the rules!

Some of my days of late have been drafting, measuring, pressing, sorting and the like. I stumbled on a very organized-Value-Village-COVID-19 in Nanaimo. I glove-masked up and went in. Lots of decent, reasonable priced for a retail market. Maybe I'm just forgetting prices but these prices in VV and other "thrift shops" are becoming unreasonable for many seniors and low income folks to afford. The pricing seemed higher than previous times. Leave me your comnents below. I felt suddenly without much blue or green in my stash. Sashiko Sockeye Bowls

My start was all 'high hat' style of course and then my life changed dramatically with one phone call. I got a new job! So as the days that I'd scheduled for work on this little project blog tour participation dwindled with chaotic new work schedules, the drama increased!  My plan was to create a new piece with Carol's Bowls With Borders paper piecing. Where I live is a constant influence in my art, my life and my choices for recreation. In the photo above, I actually hand sewed the paper piecing. I bet that is a first! They turned out really well, but the hand stitching wouldn't let me tear away the paper. I imagined a modern piece, the graph paper told me so and I continued. I free hand drew my version of a sockeye on the back side of iron on stabilizer on red linen.  I am a fisher as you all know by now! A little bit of stitching...

We are helping to tidy up my father in law's home and get him settled into a new home. Its tough, not easy to deal with and we are trying our best to hold down all that we have going on. But thank you for all the kind comments on my spring posts, its been kinda dismal in terms of my stitching, nothing really new, just a bunch of little pages for my weight loss journal. The following pages are some of what I've been mindlessly stitching out the stress of these times. Rusty is aging fast and this is a common view of Rusty whenever we find a shady spot to sit and watch the waves come in. She is 14.5 yrs old this year. We are taking time in small bites to reset our extra busy-ness this summer, elder care and a wedding, its way too busy. Happy quilting everyone. Carli
