Victoria's Modern T-Shirt Quilt & Modern Organic Giveaway

Image
I just love working with the personalized history in t-shirts of my commissioned clients. Recently, Victoria contacted me about making a t-shirt quilt for her....she's off to university! I started by stabilizing each t-shirt with an iron on fusible webbing on the back of each logo to be used. This is where it starts! I spend time thinking about the events that may have contributed to the events portrayed in the logo. I use organic cotton and decided that a 'modern' approach to this quilt was needed. I began with piecing varied backgrounds onto the logos in the colors of hot pink, black, light blue and lime green. As you can see in this photo, the blocks sort of take on a life of their own into sections. This part progressed quite fast. Once all the blocks appropriately start working together, then the sections are created waiting for the backings to be created to sandwiching with the front sections! The backing sections grow in a modern way,...

Tutorial-Canadian Girl Quilt Part One

Image
This New Modern quilting tutorial got started after I heard from several locals and received some emails from my blog readers that they are confused with the "New Modern Thing" and rightly so. I kind of knew something about the use of 'negative space' on quilts, as in this pillow cover I made many years ago now. Who wouldn't be if you have been learning how to make quilts the 'old fashioned way' and then came along the gadgets, rulers, etc. So I've had some time to reflect on this and did suggest in previous posts that some tutorials were coming and here is one! Modern Quilting has taken a great run at the the establishment of traditional quilters! Modern Quilting seems to be driven by young women and men that like to use 'negative' space in their quilt making process. There is nothing wrong with this, its just what it is. The same rules apply if you are looking for a great quilt that will last many generations and be ha...

Crazy Quilting Give Away Winners!

Image
Crazy Quilting is a slow kind of quilting if you do the embellishment by hand. As you know, I'm an avid fisher-person and I need to have "Take Along" projects ready for this summer! I was re-inspired again. I had began sorting through the various bins of my 'special CQ stash" after I decided that I'd send a Crazy Quilting scrap bag kit of fabrics to the four winners of the recently posted "Crazy Quilting Giveaway" The winner's color choices were: Blue and cranberry Jewel tones-blues, greens, purples pink deep blue and purple  My choices were as varied as a peacock display and it was hard to try and hit these requested colors choices.  I learned a bunch of things about myself in this process. I love deep dark and mysterious colors and textures for my crazy quilting stash. When I checked out the difference for my new stash I found the same. This photo above describes how best my choices are as varied as the quil...

Modern Quilts and Reuse

Image
I'm so excited that our community has finally grown to want to an actual real quilt guild. Our community really is spread out so far that its actually takes in 7 communities Fort Fraser , Fraser Lake , Burns Lake , Houston , Telkwa , Smithers , Moricetown and Hazelton . Our fledgling start up guild is holding it second "Quit In" in Telkwa on March 31, centrally located, at the Telkwa Christian Reformed Church, across from the One Stop in Telkwa. We'll start at 9:30 and play with fabric until 4 pm. Its a brown  bag lunch, so we're not making extra potluck stuff that usually is too much for all of us and its takes more work.  Reuse is a  big deal with us. We all were really focused to figure out how to hold a mini workshop for 3 hours at the upcoming Farmer's market on June 16th? Fortunately, we have received funding to hold such an event like this and we're moving ahead. This pink quilt is one such example of a baby quilt made from sweaters,...

My UFO Challenge 2012

Image
Come on now, lets pull out the box or the bin with those quilt tops resting and waiting for completion? I tried in 2011 to complete 11 UFO's and I did manage to get quite a five done.   I needed to be reminded of what I actually did complete this past year! I needed a little extra encouragement to go forth and tackle the ones in waiting. So far, the angel quilt and the blue jean circle quilt and the bastardized Mosaic Tiles quilt are the only ones that are finished. I was inspired by  Patchworktimes.com and her challenge of committing to complete UFO's. I did get the machine quilting done on the green log cabin round robin quilt and machine quilted on the colorful log cabin/drunkard's path quilt. They need only the binding, so if I get cracking, I can have two more in 2011. But I have several on the go and not complete. Here is my 2012 UFO List to complete: 1. Merry Modern Christmas (below) is a table runner that will have addit...

QWI Quilt Workshop Oct 15th

Image
You'll never know what happens with this fast block technique and that was evident at this workshop! It was so much fun. These are the colors that I picked out from my stash and one of my students didn't have the right amount of Fat Quarters. So it worked our perfectly! See the variations achieved in one class. What fun it is and so versatile. I love to see photos from anyone anywhere that has tried my technique. email me, please, see my profile for email details.  This my technique "Slicing and Dicing" found on Quilting Gallery  This fast and easy block is something that once anyone has learned it can be transferred to hundreds of different variations and would make an awesome WI Fun Raiser for any  branch! If you'd like to have a professional quilter come and teach a class for your branch, please leave a comment on this blog or "follow" this blog to learn more about my classes. Denise (below) was very careful as s...
