Memory Quilts

Image
I have made many quilts that are not even photographed and you have forgotten where they all actually went to in the mail or via a hug. I sometimes see one of my quilts by surprise and its like meeting an old friend. I have great memories of each quilt, I can remember all the little issues or joy of discovery in each one, sometimes you spend only a few hours with each one or sometimes its many days, weeks or months to their completion. Enjoy a sampling of some quilts I've made, given away and some were commissions too. I still take commissions on making memory quilts, as they are my favorite. Its a personal journey to use a persons clothing into a quilt. Each one is lovingly worked on with mindful fingers, needles and thread. My Blue Denim Quilt, jeans and  vintage barkcloth. Made around 2010. A snippet from a Denim Photo Quilt 2016 Smithers Centennial Quilt 2013 Canadian Endangered Species Quilt for my hubby, has wool batting, very warm, perfect for cold chilly nights. 2009 Madusa...

Hexie Quilt Top WIP

Some of my days of late have been drafting, measuring, pressing, sorting and the like. I stumbled on a very organized-Value-Village-COVID-19 in Nanaimo. I glove-masked up and went in. Lots of decent, reasonable priced for a retail market. Maybe I'm just forgetting prices but these prices in VV and other "thrift shops" are becoming unreasonable for many seniors and low income folks to afford. The pricing seemed higher than previous times. Leave me your comnents below. I felt suddenly without much blue or green in my stash. But the good news is that it means I'm using it up at least my green and blue stash. And this is the first really sized load of fabrics I've purchased since 2016. Not bad! And that the green and blue fabrics might just find its way into new family quilts that I'm working on. Plus, I'm starting another Canadian Flag quilt for my youngest son. He's been wanting one since I gave the first one I made and then gave...

Stitching and Embellishment Favorites

Image
Everyone has a different slant on traditional foundation stitches. In this photo, you can see that the yellow ribbon is actually yellow fine gauze type of fabric. I liked it so in it went into this piece. Machine embroidery is another way that you can embellish your cq's with and many it have done professionally or do it themselves. It falls into "machine embroidery embellishment." I don't use a lot of machine embroidery of this a large design, but I think it looks really funky in the right setting. My fish-mates found solace in books on this rainy day of fishing. I turned to my stitching projects. I think this is "true" embellishment in the purchased netting of orange and beige, bottom right. In the center of this cq piece, I've used some sparkly braid from my upholstering materials. It fits right in and with crazy quilting, I do not believe in boundaries. The freedom to create is what I think crazy quilting is all abo...

Log Cabin- Hand Stitching Tutorial

Image
I just love to play with fabric and seeing that my life is swerving and growing faster than I ever thought possible, but I'm excited and want to tell you about it. These blocks are a finished 12.5 in. square.  This version is for hand stitching or machine stitching the fast and random way. Start: various dark print or solid strips WOF x 1 1/2 in. I leave all strips WOF throughout the hand stitching, I don't pre-cut into assigned lenghts. Various light colored print or solid strips WOF x 1 1/2 in. I cut random 1 1/2 in. squares in one color.  Usually I use a red color print to pay homage to the original tradition of the red color in center represents the hot fire of the hearth of the home. Then light color prints in 1 1/2 in. sqaures to begin each block. Stitch a series of two 1 1/2 in. squares together with a simple running stitch as shown in all photos. Finger press or press to the dark side with iron. Keep adding s...

Hand Quilting Modern Makeover

Image
Last night it was a little crazy weather time. High winds, blowing snow and then we lost power. We had no Internet last night or today either. So please enjoy my little wee post. And I've had such lovely comments from soo many people, it's a humbling feeling to read what others think of my work. It is work to me. With getting used the various back issues that have suddenly arrived in my life, I do more sitting. I know that sitting is all the biggest threat to health, but what is a person to do? I work hard on making myself feel valued and cared about and this blog does serve that feedback loop of friends and sisters from far away who enjoy what I do. Thank you to all the various sisters I have around the world, thank you!! Happy slow quilting has become my new mantra!

Modern MakeOver-Hand Quilting

Hello quilters, wherever you are, I hope it's lovely outside! Today, I awoke very early in the morning and our cabin was a little chilly. The woodstove warmed up the inside really fast and I sat down to a coffee and a hand quilting project. I've decided to do hand quilting because this quilt has so much cream solid color in it and I thought it would be really fun to make the dark areas pop up. I've added a 5 inch border of cream solid colored cotton to the borade and now those crazy blocks just popped! But for some reason that photo will not load! I'm linking up with Needle and Thread Network today! Happy Quilting Everyone!
