Happiness Quilt Finished

Image
This quilt is finally a real comletely finished quilt on my bed! We started using it Nov 30th,2019 as the coolness of wet air, brisk winds and rain began to come on often and for days at a time. Sometimes, I wonder what a monsoon is like? 😊 I wanted the scrappy old fashioned feel that took me to a thoughtful place. This quilt is my second personal king sized quilt to make. These blocks could write a romance novel. They could giggle like a school girl from the compliments of men. They were the remnants of a bag of fabric I bought at a thrift store many years ago. Perhaps in the Kootenay Country in the 1990's. Many of these were hand pieced while sitting waiting for my Skeema River fish bell to go off! Many blessed memories that now, my husband I look back on fondly.  These blocks were not "planned" to be scrappy, they just were, simple as that. Ideas, ideas and then moving twice was not fun. This poor quilt just kept on getting left in the b...

Scrappy Dresden Play

Image
I started playing again with 28 blocks of assorted blues, browns and red background  blocks. What to do with these blocks, I wonder aloud. My time is spent mostly editing and writing these days and its a joy to get back to stitching! You get the idea. I didn't have all my normal range of felts or pencil crayons, nor dare say absolutely only three pages of graph paper, so I improvised.  The blue sashing or the light sashing color on point is where these next photos describe. What do you think? I'll not say at this point to which one I prefer, I have one favorite though, but I want the feedback from you? I found this ufo hanging out in a bin of fabrics that I had reserved for improv applique that I'm working on. I may cut it open like I did with Modern Makeover. This was wee bit too dark for me. I needed more light and sunshine in the layout. Do leave me a comment, even if you read this years from now, leave me a comment on...

EZ Dresden Challenge Entrant

Image
Dresden Plate fan blocks are one of my favorites! As you can see I have several in progress. I have grown though as a quilter and artist in the last year or two, more so than at any time of my life and blogging responses have fueled my fire. What I love about blogging is the instant responses you get as the world of readers scroll through interesting blogs. If your stuff is interesting to them, then they say so. Readers of blogs are "why" many of us keep working towards dreams, ideas and projects. Then sharing and engaging with our readers and the world. The Salt Lake Modern Quilt Guild started back in June with this Challenge and have partnered with EZ Quilting/Simplicity and a host of other manufacturers to celebrate Darlene Zimmerman’s 20th Anniversary designing quilting tools for EZ Quilting. To help them celebrate they are hosting a challenge — Use the EZ Dresden Ruler to create a project, then enter it to win amazing priz...

Carli's Freestyle Dresden Plate Template & Tutorial

Image
I make my own templates. Its quite simple, trust is involved and careful storage of similar sized templates are essential. As you know from reading my blog, I like to be frugal with supplies and tools. I used the cardboard above decades ago and I still have it. I didn't have a template in the beginning. So I made my own. You start with making a straight line on cereal board. Placing a quilting ruler with the 60 degree line on the drawn straight line. Then draw a line upwards away from the original line. Repeat on the other side. Its your decision to decide what size of fan template you want?  In this photo above, you can see that I used a fabric fan piece to assist you in your fan development.  Here I used a template from a magazine wedge that I modified to fit my size of fan. This is a simple way to use something already made. You can even take another dresdent fan apart to discover the size of a finished plate. Its up to you. This is my sto...

Now a little vintage cloth Japanese inspiration!

Ok, I admit it, I was slightly distracted the past week and I missed posting at least one new post each week. But I had good reason! Our northern temperatures dipped wayyyyyyy down to -38 C and I was back and forth between the barns and the house all week! It was so cold, I couldn't just grab any old  jacket and check the chickens! I had to have: all over my face touque, with drawstring for the tiny opening so I can see then another touque over that my serious ice fishing insulated pants two sweaters under my big yard coat my double thickness work mits my two puffs on my puffer before I go outside at these temperatures So now, you can see why I was a little distracted. I had rest up in between just to do the next shift! But thankfully I'm able to report that we are back to normal winter temperature of -10 C so all I'm back to posting!  While it was so darn cold that going outside was an ordeal, I started into my favorite Quilt Mania magazines. Sure e...
