Upcycled Outdoor Quilts

Image
My sweet friend Miss Pat of Muddy Boot Prints educates youngsters in her outdoor learning program full days, outsidemostly. Rain or shine, they do have warm up spots for wet little ones out of the rain for brief times. This is where my two new quilts almost finished will go.  These are reused moving blanket from U-Haul, are onto a new life, giving warmth and comfort to red nosed children and two sweet ladies, Miss Pat and Miss Velma. This began as a way to reintroduce myself to being able to plan out my projects and realizing that I had way too many quilts that need desparately to be completed. But while completing those quilts which need my attention in my sewing womb. I began with an idea. I  began with reusing moving blankets for new quilts that can take the abuse of outdoor use. I pictured my friend and her business partner getting a wee bit chilly at times, I wanted to jump in and get busy on this project. When you have the means to buy fabric...

Bat Girl Goes Out

I've had the beginnings of this modern art project sitting around for eons. I decided it would be perfect for a Halloween quilt. I love free form quilting, I really do. It leaves me open to other possibilities that don't become apparent until you sit down and focus. Now, you might think that this looks kinda crazy right? I've not decided if the Modern crazy patch making of fabric is the same as real Crazy Quilting. What do you think about making of fabric from scraps and do you think its a kinda crazy? I'm finishing this one today. Check back tomorrow for this gorgeous and creepy finish. \ Happy Quilting everyone!

Wow, I'm so flattered. Thank you so much readers and Internet folk that find me and my blog Good Earth Quilting.  My 2004 Award winning "Silver Linings Crazy Quilt" It was the simple win of that quilt that made me start looking around online for something I could I use to share my quilts.  And here we are 15 years later and going strong online. Do you remember all the histeria around the clock turning over in 2000? I was working full time back then, I remember working on the border pieces, hand embroidering on my coffee and lunch breaks. It must have been soothing for me during that time when the student I worked with was a true challenge to remain calm and nurturing for her. As my little light began to shine, I began to find my niche. I'd love to read about how you found your niche? And so, to the changes coming to Good Earth Quilting. I'm working behind the scenes on an e-book that I hope will be out before Christmas and I'm wo...

A little rural stitching and gardeing!

Image
I'm outside lots this year and it feels so good to get outside and play in dirt!! Spring is here and we're  busy outside with gardening and camping! I can't remember if I have already posted this, but these two wall quilts are made by me for my friend Myrtle. Myrtle hand beaded the owl and flower, both of these are going to Myrtle's grand-daughters. Lots quad riders checking out the river a few weeks ago. No more ice on the river, just its usual spring run off water event as in the little ditch run off by Quick Station Rd. Then new stuff with angels in mind is on my design desk . And I'm finishing up a Christmas gift for my son, Jon as in the photo below! So this is all for me today. I'm linking up with Needle and Thread Network. Happy quilting and gardening folks! Carli

I'm a winner!

So pleasant to sit down and read my first email that I had one two lovely patterns over at Geta's Studio! I've been really intrigued with her patterns and wanted to try something, but I thought, "Darn, I'm not buying anything new until my challenge is over on June 30th, 2014. So delayed and then she  had a giveaway posted and I entered myself with my gmail address in the post as I'm a no-reply blogger. I fell in love with this pouch purse and so its my first choice of two patterns that I could pick for free! Then I also really saw possiblilities in this one up next! If you haven't found this Romanian Studio , then you are missing something! Geta's work is impeccible and her insight into sphere styled quilts is remarkable. I recommend her work and hope you can find the time to visit her blog.

Chevron Border Complete - [Midnight Over The Oasis]

Image
Phew , this has been a stretch for me to complete this and attend to the commission art pieces being requested for Christmas! But luckily I had made up Chevron Braid pieces for the completion of my Summer Dresdens and then didn't use it and when I put these together on my new design sheet I new right away it must be. I think it looks really cute and add's a new twist to this quilt version for anyone else who might want to do something unique into any pattern. As you may have understood about me and Good Earth Quilting; we love to recycle and its not only from our new fabric scraps, its from clothing, vintage mostly and I love the old fashioned 1970's corner background fabric for the 4 corner blocks. I used these pressing bars in all the applique vines on the flower border! I am total fan of these Quilter's Press Bars. Here's why: The perform a great function of using up scraps in 12 inch lengths and so you can make your bias vine on any...

Northern B.C Hand Quilting Celebration

Image
Carli Heinrichs, from Telkwa, British Columbia, Canada  I started hand quilting after I attended a quilt show in Washington about 15 years ago while participating with a carpool of quilters from Republic, Wash. I can't remember where it was, but I watched the Governor's Award recipient do her hand quilting demo. I was so amazed and realized that it just took lots of practice. I thank this lady for my start. First up is my precious Altered Magic Tiles, I couldn't seem to just stick with it where the instructions said to stop.  Up next is the mega projects written about in this post "Canadian Birds and Giveaway" which I posted about on July 4th, 2012.  Its on our bed over the winter. This quilt is filled with a light layer of wool batting. It was dense in some places to quilt and easy peasy in others. But I recommend it if you like to sleep in a cool room warm and toasty under a wool lined quilt. A retreat friend of mine took t...

My Space, Repurposed

Image
Every time the new year comes by, I hear resolutions that often go by the wayside. I didn't make any, nor do I have any unfulfilled resolutions from last year, to be guilty about.   You know what I mean? I'm cruising the path my life is on and that's very cool. I acknowledge all my actions to be truthful, kind and dedicated to peace. I work and I play. I play to the music of good blues players, swaying to the beat while cutting out fabric or sewing blocks. But the main thing is I live in the moment of the experience. I let go and drink a glass wine or two. I believe I may as well have fun while quilting.  How would you describe feeling in the moment? As you all know who faithfully read my  blog, know that I like to reuse and I like to experiment with different ways of reusing.   Hence, I make do with many things before buying new stuff. Because after all, its stuff. I can't TAKE any of it with me when I die, so I intend to have fun with my stash. He...

The Countdown 2013

Image
I am alone with the creative urgency that brews inside of me. Its a spark that keeps coming back. Much like the new growth of springtime after a long cold winter. The creation of the Smithers 2013 Centennial Quilt has been and continues to be the most promising of all my work so far! A challenge that may have scared off some, but for me its a rise to the occasion kind of moment. I don't want to be one who would say, "I should have done this or that?"  I believe that I make my own future and all the quilts that have yet to come are inside me still. I intend to stitch and quilt until my last breath. I am an independant quilter for sure! I rarely use a pattern. I rarely seek consultation with others about colors. I rarely ask for help.  But this project was an asking, taking and a giving experience with the 7 other artists collaborating on this vision.  Its one that I'll not forget, ever! I thank Perry Rath, Linda ...

2012-Crazy Quilts-Fine Scraps Giveaway! Revised

Image
"I've got it, Carli, put crazy quilted center piece into these bags!" my friend Nola is a recent crazy quilt addict and typical of most who discover the joy of crazy quilting. This is the bag she was referring to, that I placed an orphan Dresden plate block in the center area of the bag!   We become addicted!  As I started to get organized for this posting, I started checking all my little  parcels of UFO's that I am constantly working on throughout years sometimes. The photos are all the various bits and pieces of various crazy quilting blocks and projects that have been started, worked on and still yet incomplete!   I take heart that all will eventually be complete and this post will document my process and progress.  Some experimentation by incorporating recycled denim in this one, yet a full concept of my discovery. This is my progress on a green quilt for a family request.  What follows are the close up progre...
