Alberta Blue Quilt

Alberta Blue quilt is ongoing and without a goal for a finished date. Not much to talk about, just applique and machine sewing and more applique. But having fun anyway! Happy Stitching everyone! Carli

Maps Challenge Round-a-Bout

Image
My Maps Challenge over at AHIQ is coming along, but with a significant twist. I've lost all track of time and I've missed this area of focus on the AHIQ site. The Spring Block  From here I was thinking trails and roadways that intersect with treed landscapes. I like the way that these look like birch trees, but they left me kinda of flat and my excitement of these blocks left me.  I was left with trying to interpret the vision I had in my head again and again. I failed again and again in my color pallet. I struggled and like many of you, when the struggle became a chore, it had to go! Reminder to my readers that I take the choice of not buying new fabric seriously.  So this means that for me, I must make use of the prints, textures and colors I have in my stash. Its insanely presumptious of myself to think that continued buying of new fabric somehow didn't affect the world's pollution. It does in a minute way, but I'm still guilty of consuming,...

Crazy Stitches are Fun

Image
Hi everyone, Its good to be back to the sewing room after a busy summer. I am working on a long time project and determined to get it finished before the coldest part of our rainy winter in Duncan begins. I am making little crazy stitched blocks for a future slow stitching project. I must admit I've been slightly distracted this last year with ailments etc, that thank goodness I had some crazy blocks to embellish and my ankle is finalling healing.  I'm able to start doing more walking, tendon injuries really do take a long time to heal. Embellishing your Quilts Embellishment doesn't have to be going out and buying more stuff! Really people, I find the best embellishments are the fun stuff that fall into your lap and you wrinkle you brow and go wtf, could it work?  As you may know, I am not a wall flower type of personality. I will jump in and try out stuff that may not have been tried before and why not, just because I can. Its my therapy t...

Wedding Table Runners

Image
Last summer was one of the busiest on record, buying, moving and two weddings! While the summer was very busy, I started on some more autumnal colored circles for the first table runner for Monique. You know I've recently had to put them aside as its all way tooooo addictive. Who knew I'd love hand applique of simple circles, as much as I do? And her husband to be wanted something in red and blue.  And as I look back on it, its a total wonder how I managed to make anything with my sewing womb a total uproar. I'm culling and giving away to local good charities and still I have too much stuff! But this Denim Wedding quilt was a 2017 finish and it completely went right by me!  Again, between moving and then buying, it was a hectic summer and I envy of you quilters who are so organized. But slowly I've gained ground with all this culling, its actually quite freeing and is allowing me to focus on what's important to me. Getting out into the na...

Happiness Quilt Top Progress

Image
This happy little quilt is finally reaching a point where I can call it a quilt top, almost! For those of you just popping in to my blog, I've been working on the Scrappy Dresden Blocks for several years cleaning up scraps from my numerous boxes of scraps! Yes, its true, if you are frugal quilter, you acquire scraps from other projects and thousands of us are using the scraps in new projects or by donating the scraps to a local thrift shop. I am still working on 365 Circles Quilt top. Making bright and cheerful Scrappy Dresden Plate Blocks are not a new obsession to me, I've made a few quilts before. The quilt below is my "Canadian Birds Quilt" for my husband back in 2011 I think. Yeah, I was stumped for awhile over the early summer months of 2017 with what to do on the corners! I really like the striped scrappy approach used in Quilty Folks blog mentioned below. But was wondering about a crazy quilt corners and still thinking about th...

Crazy Heart Quilt Progress

Image
Crazy Heart CQ started some time ago. Truth be told I had begun the inner 'heart' while I was mulling over getting started on the Smithers Centennial Quilt which was the early days of 2012. How time flies! I decided again this spring of 2017 it was time that 'Crazy Heart' found a home and direction. I had originally used some fringy braid that was hand sewn around the outside edge of the heart. But when I reviewed this peice, the fringy braid had to go. It was this initial start to remove the fringy braid that I realised underneath the braid, the heart was simply hand sewn with a light hand. The new trim I chose to use was brown and black varigated wool. I did a quick and rustic whip stitch twice over to couch it down to the center of the quilt. I have been working on this quilt in hopes of getting it done for my sister's birthday, but missed that deadline and so it goes. But only time will tell me when its done! In the meantime, here...

Cool idea! Patterns Anyone?

Image
I just found this blogger Hibiscus Stitches and was poking around with her pages and I found this page of surprises. This blogger has a bundle of really cute patterns from single patterns to a book as well. I have found this great pattern in the Quilts magazine Jan/Feb 2015. You must check it out. Click on the link below. Enjoy, Carli http://hibiscus-stitches.blogspot.ca/p/items-for-sale.html?m=1

Flower Border and Link Up- [Midnight Over The Oasis]

Image
I had to make it mine so the leaves were not cut and appliqued, I simply used large rick rack for the leaves and machine appliqued those into place. If was fast and easy to do, I encourage quilting out of the box. You can see the hand embroidery I did on some of the Orange Peel blocks, just for texture. Did you notice the cute buttons on the basket vine? I really enjoyed making the baskets from crazy piecing and this looks really cute. I hand embroidered the basket handles with a big primitive stitch. Sorry about all the fussy edges, the wind was blowing and I my hands were getting cold. But I must say these Quilters Press Bars that I won at a quilt retreat many years ago were the perfect thing again. Here's why: to buy them they cost around $7.99 at a quilt shop, you get five sizes You can make the 6 inch sections the patterns calls for in a snap You don't have to buy several colours of bias tape and I find the bias tape is never the colour you want....

Northern B.C Hand Quilting Celebration

Image
Carli Heinrichs, from Telkwa, British Columbia, Canada  I started hand quilting after I attended a quilt show in Washington about 15 years ago while participating with a carpool of quilters from Republic, Wash. I can't remember where it was, but I watched the Governor's Award recipient do her hand quilting demo. I was so amazed and realized that it just took lots of practice. I thank this lady for my start. First up is my precious Altered Magic Tiles, I couldn't seem to just stick with it where the instructions said to stop.  Up next is the mega projects written about in this post "Canadian Birds and Giveaway" which I posted about on July 4th, 2012.  Its on our bed over the winter. This quilt is filled with a light layer of wool batting. It was dense in some places to quilt and easy peasy in others. But I recommend it if you like to sleep in a cool room warm and toasty under a wool lined quilt. A retreat friend of mine took t...
