Applique-The Underside

I love applique and do follow some awfully good hand applique artists out there, but rarely do I read about what goes on underneath the hand applique. By this I mean, do you remove the layers of fabric underneath your hand or machine applique?

You'll see that I did needle turn on these petal pieces and then embroidered the blanket stitch again.

I always remove the layers underneath most larger shaped applique project I'm doing. It makes the whole quilt behave better when machine or hand quilting I think. I don't remove the layers from the small quilts like what Pretty Petals quilt.

I found my Pretty Petals flimsey. Man I've been looking for this little quilt top since arriving home in April.

I will post soon the finished Pretty Petals. Happy Quilting my fibre friends!

  3. Good article. I do machine applique and have not removed under layers but they are usually quick children's or samples that I just don't take the time. One quilt I made years ago would have benefited greatly if they had been removed. It was 90% hand done.
Will use this method on my next "keeper". Noticed you used blanket stitch also-my fave. I do use my machine blanket stitch since I have a quilt my grandmother made that has her black hand stitches all around her butterflies.

    1. You know when I lived near the US border, I used to visit the Colville quilters Guild, one time I was so lucky to have met the Washington State Governor Award winner of hand quilting. Her work was so meticulous and she had this beautiful butterfly applique quilt that was so old fashioned a beauty I've not forgotten the fine work of my friends to the south.

  4. I haven't appliqued in years. I will probably make an applique quilt some time in the future. There is just not enough time to do everything I want to. This is a lovely quilt.

  6. I like to leave the background intact when I applique. However I am a firm believer in doing what works best for you. Your work is really lovely and the blanket stitch is a great stitch. I really like it because when you look at these types of quilts you can see the hand of the maker!

  7. When I do hand appliqué, I use freezer paper. I leave it in until I'm ready to do the last few stitches and then pop it out. It's what works for me. I use different methods for machine appliqué, depending on the final look, I want.
